Commercial interest in alternative CUDA implementations remains volatile. ZLUDA, the project that once received quiet backing from AMD to run NVIDIA-specific code on its GPUs, has lost its latest round of private funding. In response, lead developer Andrzej Janik is shifting the project’s focus away from heavy industrial machine learning and toward the optimization of legacy gaming technologies.

The v6 release successfully implements NVIDIA’s PhysX on AMD hardware, showing significant performance gains in older titles such as Mafia II. While the project includes several updates for machine learning and expanded Windows support, the loss of institutional capital returns ZLUDA to the status of a side project. It serves as a case study in the difficulty of maintaining a cross-vendor translation layer without the sustained financial commitment of a major hardware manufacturer.
