Uber constructs a global autonomous network through silent equity and integration

After divesting its internal robotics division four years ago, the company has assembled a constellation of thirty partnerships to control the autonomous layer of global transport.

Thirty autonomous vehicle companies now sit within the Uber ecosystem, a count that reflects a fundamental shift from proprietary hardware development to a strategy of industrial aggregation. This network, built through a series of investments and commercial agreements over the past twenty-four months, allows the company to capture the autonomous market without the capital intensity of maintaining its own fleet or sensor stack. The strategy marks a complete pivot from the company’s 2014-era attempt to build its own self-driving technology, a project that was shuttered and sold following a fatal 2018 accident and a high-profile trade secrets dispute.

The current architecture relies on deep equity stakes and platform integration rather than ownership. Uber maintains a 19.7 percent equity stake in Aurora Innovation, the firm that acquired its original robotics unit, and recently expanded a long-term collaboration to deploy autonomous freight hauls between Dallas and Houston. In Europe and the Middle East, the company has positioned itself as the operational interface for localized players, taking a 30 percent stake in fleet operator Avomo to manage maintenance and depot operations for hardware partners like Waymo and WeRide.

Capital commitments have followed these operational ties. In late 2025, Uber contributed to a $375 million investment and commercial package for Avride, the Nebius Group spinout currently deploying sidewalk robots and autonomous Hyundai IONIQ 5s in Texas. Similar moves have been made in Asia, including a strategic partnership with Baidu to deploy Apollo Go vehicles in markets outside of China and the United States, effectively positioning Uber as the global distributor for disparate autonomous technologies.

While the expansion is rapid, it remains subject to the friction of regulatory and safety oversight. In May 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Avride following more than a dozen incidents. This friction underscores the tension of Uber’s new model: while it has successfully offloaded the risks of direct hardware development, its brand and platform remain the primary interface for a technology that is still maturing under regulatory scrutiny.
