The 2026 total solar eclipse will traverse the Atlantic and Southern Europe

A two-minute window of totality in August offers a rare terrestrial view of the solar corona's high-temperature plasma.

On August 12, the moon’s shadow will cross the eastern coast of Greenland at speeds exceeding 3,400 kilometers per hour. This path of totality represents the first significant opportunity for European-based solar observation in decades. While the shadow begins in the Arctic, it will sweep across Iceland and northern Spain, ending in the Balearic Islands at sunset. The maximum duration of totality—the period where the sun is entirely obscured—will last approximately two minutes and eighteen seconds over the Atlantic.

For the scientific community, these two minutes are an essential window for studying the solar corona. The corona consists of sheets of plasma significantly hotter than the sun’s surface, a temperature inversion that remains one of the central puzzles of stellar physics. Under normal conditions, the corona is invisible, lost in the glare of the sun’s inner regions. During totality, however, these shimmering structures become visible to the naked eye and sensitive instrumentation alike.

While a partial eclipse will be visible across much of North America and Europe, the narrow band of totality is where the most significant data will be harvested. In Reykjavík, totality will last just over a minute, marking the first such event for Iceland since 1954. The logistics of this eclipse are substantial, requiring researchers to position themselves along a fleeting, high-speed corridor to capture a glance at the sun’s outermost atmosphere.
