OpenAI chief operating officer Brad Lightcap departs ahead of IPO

Brad Lightcap, who has managed OpenAI’s financial and operational scaling since 2018, is leaving the company. His departure, announced internally on Tuesday, marks the end of an eight-year tenure that saw the organization transition from a research lab into a commercial entity preparing for a public listing. Lightcap previously served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer before recently moving to lead special projects.

His exit is part of a broader consolidation of leadership as OpenAI matures. In recent months, the company has seen the departure of several high-level figures, including Fidji Simo, who led AGI development, and Kevin Weil, who oversaw the science vertical. These shifts occur as the company navigates the transition from experimental releases like the Sora video generator toward a structured, enterprise-ready product suite.

Lightcap has not yet detailed his next venture, though he indicated his focus remains on addressing technical and societal hurdles necessary for the success of advanced AI. His departure follows the recent launch of Daybreak, OpenAI’s new cyber defense service, and the introduction of GPT-5.6 Cyber, a specialized model for defensive vulnerability research. The company continues to reorganize its Go-To-Market and government relations teams, which Lightcap helped establish, as it scales its global operations.
