OpenAI is reportedly finalizing a residential hardware device in partnership with LoveFrom, the design firm led by former Apple executive Jony Ive. The device is expected to retail for between $300 and $400, positioning it at the upper end of a smart speaker market currently dominated by lower-cost entry points from Amazon and Google.
The hardware is rumored to include moving parts and is designed for portability within the home. This move signals a strategic shift for OpenAI as it seeks to integrate its models more deeply into the daily routines of users, moving beyond browser and mobile interfaces. A launch is currently anticipated for 2027.
