Indian manufacturers lead global battery electric vehicle efficiency rankings
Tata Motors and Mahindra have surpassed Tesla and BYD in energy consumption metrics, though charging infrastructure and range remain competitive bottlenecks.

That figure, recorded by Tata Motors, secured the top spot in the 2025 International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) efficiency rankings for battery electric vehicles. Mahindra followed in second place with 113 Wh/km, placing both Indian firms ahead of Tesla and BYD in a global evaluation of 22 major manufacturers. The data reflects a focus on lean energy consumption in a market where infrastructure remains in its early stages of development.
The global average for energy consumption has remained stagnant at 131 Wh/km, with only eight of the 22 monitored firms showing year-on-year improvement. India’s performance in efficiency comes as the government targets 30% electrification of passenger vehicles by 2030, a move designed to reduce petroleum imports and strengthen domestic energy security. New regulatory standards currently under development will further tighten fuel and emission caps between 2027 and 2032.
While Indian firms lead in energy economy, significant gaps remain in performance metrics that drive mass adoption. Tata Motors ranked at the bottom of the list for charging speed and near the bottom for driving range. The divergence suggests a strategic trade-off: Indian engineering has prioritized the optimization of energy use for local urban cycles, but the industry has yet to match the high-speed charging and long-distance capabilities of its Chinese and American counterparts.
