Thirty-nine seconds separated the magnitude 7.2 foreshock from the magnitude 7.5 mainshock that struck near Yumare on 24 June. This sequence, known as a doublet earthquake, concentrated immense tectonic energy along the Oca-Ancón and El Pilar fault systems, where the Caribbean and South American plates interact at a rate of 20 millimeters per year.

The shallow depth of 10 kilometers amplified the surface acceleration, leading to the collapse of unreinforced masonry and adobe structures in the surrounding districts. The geographic focus of the rupture lies at a critical juncture where the east-west coastal faults meet the Boconó fault, a region that has not seen an event of this magnitude since 1900. Reports indicate at least 164 fatalities, with the figures expected to adjust as relief teams reach areas isolated by secondary landslides.

Seismologists maintain a 43 percent probability of a magnitude 6 or greater aftershock within the coming week. The immediate risk remains the further destabilization of already weakened infrastructure and the continued movement of soils in the mountainous terrain surrounding the capital. This event underscores the persistent volatility of the northern Venezuelan fault network, a system defined by its capacity for rapid, successive ruptures.
