Two papers by Max Planck, the 1918 Nobel laureate and a foundational figure in quantum mechanics, were recently discovered to have been retracted from the journals where they were published in the 1940s. The retractions, executed by Springer Nature, cite copyright violations and self-plagiarism—charges that historians and journal editors suggest are the result of an automated auditing bot applying 21st-century standards to mid-century academic norms.
The first paper, a 1942 philosophical essay on scientific certainty, was retracted because it had appeared in multiple journals and books. While this practice is strictly prohibited today to prevent citation inflation, it was a standard method for luminaries like Planck and Albert Einstein to reach fragmented audiences before the advent of the internet. The second paper appears to have been flagged because Planck used a title identical to a colleague’s critique he was responding to—a common convention in German academic debate that likely triggered a contemporary plagiarism algorithm.
The removal of these documents has raised concerns regarding the integrity of the historical record. Unlike standard retractions where a paper remains visible with a watermark, these entries were replaced by blank pages, effectively excising Planck’s late-career views on the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics from the digital archive. Intellectual property concerns are largely irrelevant, as Planck’s work entered the public domain decades ago.
The incident underscores a growing reliance on unilateral software in scientific publishing. The editor-in-chief of the journal in question was not consulted prior to the retractions, suggesting that internal policing software may be operating without human oversight. As publishers move to clean up digital databases, the risk of "memory-holing" foundational debates remains a significant tension for the scientific community.
