Authorities in Texas utilized the system, maintained by the technology firm Flock, to track a woman who had reportedly self-administered an abortion. The search extended into states where the procedure remains legal, including Illinois and Washington.

The incident underscores a structural shift in how local law enforcement utilizes distributed hardware. Flock’s camera network is typically marketed to municipalities as a tool for mitigating vehicle theft and identifying missing persons through localized monitoring.
